The question is always the same: where can we play tonight, near here, and is a slot free at eight? playz.in is a directory built around that question. Every venue is a place you can book by the hour, listed by city and area, by activity, and by the times of day it is open, with its own site and its own numbers.

The home reads like a scoreboard: a dark floodlit ground, a lime accent, the cities and the activities as fixtures, and the venues as ticket stubs. It was built to be the opposite of the grey listing page every directory ships with.

The work

Venues come from OpenStreetMap and from the venues’ own websites, which are re-read weekly so that opening hours and activities stay true. The design was locked in a brief before a line of the page was written, and the page was built and reviewed against it rather than improvised: typography, the scoreboard grammar, the motion, the phone layout, all decided first.

How it is built

A static site from a small database, shipped as Cloudflare static assets and rebuilt nightly. The whole site, the build and the launch script live in one small project folder, which is how all of the October registers were made.
