Most people answer this question by opening twenty tabs: in which extensions is this exact word registered, and since when? tlds.in answers it with one page per word that lists every extension we have seen it in, ordered from the oldest registration to the newest, each with the registration date, the expiry and the registrar as the registry itself records them, and whether the name resolves in DNS today.

Oldest first is the thesis. The age of the registrations around a word tells you more about its value than any appraisal tool: a word taken in .com in 1997, in .net and .org in the years after, and in a dozen country codes since, is a word people keep wanting.

The work

The hard part is not the page but the honesty of its facts. Registration dates come from WHOIS or RDAP the last time we looked a name up, and the page says so; a missing date is shown as missing rather than guessed; a name that lapsed and was registered again shows its newest registration because that is what the registry says. The DNS column is checked live when the page opens.

Behind the word pages sit browse pages by letter and the list of every word with a page, so that nothing on the site is more than three clicks from the home, and a data page that shows what people have looked up.

How it is built

tlds.in is a second face of the Go service that serves crawls.in: the same index of names, a registry-record store with one enforced date format, and templates for the word, the letter and the about pages. Its light paper, Bricolage Grotesque and IBM Plex Mono became the values of our whole data-tools family; the other registers adopted its system rather than inventing another.
